These are the rules of Garniop. Note: If there is a discrepancy between the summary text and the official text, the official text rules.
Scoring
Rule 1
Toss Garniop around to teammates. If you catch the Garniop, you get 1 point on board A. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
In order to score points, one must throw the Garniop to a teammate. If they catch it with their hand(s), they will add 1 point to their points on "Board A".
Rule 2
If you drop it, it's anyone's to take, however the first to touch it gets it. No contact. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
If the Garniop is not caught, the first person to touch it will retain or recieve possession. However, no contact with an opposing player is to be made during this process. Otherwise, penalties may be assessed.
Rule 3
One person, noted as the "Catcher", must hold his fingers out straight and get the Garniop around his hand. Then, all board A points are added on to board B. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
One person shall, before each round, be chosen as a "Catcher". He/she may not participate in throwing, catching, or picking up the Garniop. If he/she holds his/her fingers out straight and gets the Garniop to "ring" around his/her wrist, all points from board A will be added on to board B, signifying the end of the round. However, if he does not catch it around his wrist when he touches it, a penalty could be assessed.
Rule 4
Each team will get a set number of rounds, only their catcher can be in the game (so they can control when it ends). Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
Each team will have an equal and previously decided number of rounds. Only their catcher, and not the other team's, can have thier catcher on the field.
Penalties (Points awarded to other team's board B)
Rule 5
Minor Roughness - 5 points. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, a "Minor Roughness" penalty will be awarded when there is a minor incident of roughness. 5 points will be awarded according to Rule 13.
Rule 6
Roughness or second Minor Roughnesss - 15 points. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, a "Roughness" penalty will be awarded when there is a moderate incident of roughness. It will also be awarded if there is a second "Minor Roughness" by the same player. 15 points will be awarded according to Rule 13.
Rule 7
Excessive Roughness or second Roughness - 25 points and removal from game. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, an "Excessive Roughness" penalty will be awarded when there is an excessive incident of roughness. It will also be awarded if there is a second "Roughness" by the same player. 25 points will be awarded according to Rule 13. Additionally, the player will be removed from competition and will not be able to play for the remainder of the match.
Rule 8
Catcher dropping - 25 points or end of round with no points awarded (other team's choice). Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, a "Catcher dropping" penalty will be assessed when the Catcher touches the Garniop but does not legally ring it around his wrist. The other team's coach will decide if they want to have either 25 points added to their score according to Rule 13 or end the round with no points awarded.
Rule 9
First interference - warning and loss of Garniop. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, if a player interferes with a throw, they will be given a warning and the Garniop will be turned over to the opposing team. This includes purposely standing or running within 3 feet of the opposing player with the Gariop.
Rule 10
Second interference - 5 points. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, if a player interferes with a throw a second time, 5 points will be awarded according to Rule 13. This includes purposely standing or running within 3 feet of the opposing player with the Gariop.
Rule 11
Third interference - 15 points. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, if a player interferes with a throw a third time, 15 points will be awarded according to Rule 13. This includes purposely standing or running within 3 feet of the opposing player with the Gariop.
Rule 12
Fourth interference - 25 points and removal from game. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
At the referee's discrecion, if a player interferes with a throw a fourth time, 25 points will be awarded according to Rule 13. Additionally, the player will be removed from competition and will not be able to play for the remainder of the match. This includes purposely standing or running within 3 feet of the opposing player with the Garniop.
Rule 13
Penalties will be assessed by the referee immediately stopping play and awarding points to Board B. Click show to show the official rule (may be lengthy).
If a penalty is assessed, the referee must stop play immediately. Points, if any, will be awarded to Board B on the opposite team of the player who caused the penalty. This rule applies to any penalty unless specifically noted.
